Individual Reflection..

My feelings towards this project are very strong. I haven't been able to donate my hair, but soon i will. The committee has been working really hard to contact girls that want a wig and they have been achieving their goals. What i have experienced during all this time and the most memorable thing i have is when i went to Casa de la Amistad, which is where we deliver the braids and where kids without resources and that have cancer live and receive attention and medical cares, and we saw the conditions in which they lived and that the community is really moving on to help these families. I'm in quadrant I. Marisol Gonzalez Reyes.

Description

We locally lessen the problem by telling other people from our community and from other cities too to contribute and donate their hair for a good cause. We explained the causes of the project and gave them the right information about how to donate their hair and where to deposit it.

The project has been very successful because with the help of ATS community and the girls and a couple of boys that accepted to donate their hair, we have collected near to 200 braids in the years 2008-2009.

The theme of the project is important today because in these days, fashion and physical looks are very important for girls and boys, so we don't want them to lose their self esteem because they are already suffering from the disease. It also helps for donators to learn that helping others is to give something that really belongs to us and that it really hurts us to give into others that really need it.

What we learned was about the cancer treatments, the way they feel about their disease, and the way that people in our community care about helping others. We were proud to see that many many adolescents asked us about how to donate their hair and where to deliver i

We have been achieving our goal since we started the campaign. Many people have been helping and the committee has been working very hard to give wigs to girls that don't have hair

Background Information

Reduce Child Mortality: This is one of the eight United Nation´s Millenium Development Goals. It was created to fight against diseases that children without resources have and don't have money to pay the treatment. Children are dying in a very short age because of lack of medicines and care. If we pay more attention to their needs, we will be able to reduce child mortality.

The situation in Tampico and Mexico regarding the reduction of child mortality is that there are many children getting sick and don't have the resources to attend a doctor or they cannot afford the treatments and medicines. Children with cancer are the most affected, though there are a variety of associations and centers to help these children, they still become unhappy and they can't have a normal life. For example, it is usual for people to become hairless because of quimiotherapy, and afterward they feel really depressed and shy of showing themselves to other people because they don't have hair.

The main causes of the problem are the lack of attention from their families, the lack of money, lack of a good medical attention and lack of higene in the place where they live.

Trencitas de Amor is an organization which dedicates to recollect braids and then send them to a factory which makes special wigs for people with cancer, not only children.
